Research informs development. Product performance must be established for the selected model and its operating conditions; university collaboration is not product certification.

Improved filtration materials for water treatment

Working with the School of Chemical Engineering at UNSW Sydney, WAA explored activated carbon, ion-exchange media and membrane treatment. The project combined published research, structured material comparisons and experimental testing to assess potential routes for further development.

A material for the task

Different dissolved substances interact with filter materials in different ways. The UNSW project examined how material selection and treatment method can be matched to a defined water-quality challenge.

From candidate materials to measured samples

The experimental programme included column, whole-home and reverse-osmosis setups. Prepared water samples allowed specific treatment questions to be investigated, with analytical methods selected for ions, hardness, metals and PFAS. This links a material’s proposed role to measurable behaviour.

Inside the UNSW project

Three connected parts shaped the investigation.

Compare treatment options

Review carbon, ion exchange and membranes against the target substances and practical treatment requirements.

Test selected approaches

Use laboratory setups and prepared water samples to investigate material and treatment behaviour.

Analyse the samples

Apply ion chromatography, hardness testing, metals analysis and PFAS analysis to the relevant samples.
